The benefits of using props in the tradition of Iyengar Yoga are twofold. It allows you to practice asanas with greater precision and stability, and when the body is supported, the mind can open and accept the benefits of the yoga.
Iyengar Yoga has been proven to provide relief from chronic health problems such as:
Arthritis
Back Pain
Hypertension
Migraines
It may improve the practitioner’s health in all aspects or well-being: mind, body, spirit.
What is the Iyengar Method?
Iyengar’s method is a form of hatha yoga that strongly emphasizes the alignment of the body. It draws from the Ashtanga (Eight-Limbed) philosophy of Patanjali.
Iyengar Yoga practitioners focus on developing increased flexibility, strength, stability and awareness.
The asana practice has total wellbeing as it’s core. Iyengar Yoga uses props such as blocks, straps, blankets, trestles, numerous specialty wooden shapes, wedges, yoga chairs and rope walls to allow access to over 200 classical asana. BKS Iyengar developed 14 versions of pranayama (breathwork) to encourage the practitioner to a state of physical and psychological well-being through focused breathwork. The emphasis of an Iyengar Yoga practice is to calmly abide in the body and mind. BKS Iyengar described the practice as “the request of the soul for the spark of divinity within us.”
